Pharmacy First: Conditions We Can Now Treat Without a GP Appointment

If you’ve ever struggled to get a GP appointment for a minor illness, you’re not alone. With NHS services under increasing pressure, a new initiative called Pharmacy First is helping patients access faster, convenient care directly from their local pharmacy.

At Fermanagh Clinics, we’re proud to support the Pharmacy First clinical pathways – a scheme that allows trained pharmacists to assess, treat, and prescribe for certain common conditions without the need to see a doctor. This means you can walk in, be seen quickly, and leave with advice, treatment, or even a prescription – often on the same day.

Here’s a guide to the seven conditions now covered under Pharmacy First clinical pathways, and how we can help you manage them safely and effectively.

1. Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Who we can treat: Women aged 16 to 64 with symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI

What to expect: If you’re experiencing burning when urinating, needing to go frequently, or lower abdominal discomfort, you may have a UTI. Under the Pharmacy First scheme, our pharmacists can assess your symptoms, rule out complications, and offer antibiotic treatment where appropriate – without the need for a GP referral.

2. Acute Otitis Media (Ear Infections)

Who we can treat: Children aged 1 to 17 years with ear pain or suspected middle ear infection

What to expect: Ear infections are common in children and can cause pain, fever, and temporary hearing issues. Under the Pharmacy First clinical pathway, we can evaluate the severity, provide pain relief advice, and in certain cases, issue antibiotics if needed.

3. Infected Insect Bites

Who we can treat: Adults and children aged 1 year and over

What to expect: Insect bites can become red, swollen, or develop pus if infected. Our pharmacists can assess the bite site, determine if it’s infected, and prescribe a course of antibiotics when appropriate. For mild cases, we may recommend antihistamines or topical creams.

4. Impetigo

Who we can treat: Adults and children aged 1 year and over

What to expect: Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection, commonly affecting children. It appears as red sores or blisters around the nose, mouth, or hands. We can diagnose impetigo, offer hygiene advice, and supply topical or oral antibiotics to clear the infection.

5. Acute Sore Throat

Who we can treat: Patients aged 5 years and over

What to expect: Sore throats are often viral, but bacterial cases (such as strep throat) may need treatment. Using NHS-approved clinical tools, we can assess the likelihood of a bacterial infection and provide appropriate treatment, including antibiotics if necessary.

6. Shingles

Who we can treat: Adults aged 18 years and over presenting within 72 hours of symptom onset

What to expect: Shingles is a painful rash caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus. Early treatment with antiviral medication is key to reducing symptoms and preventing complications. Under the Pharmacy First scheme, we can identify shingles and supply the appropriate medication if you seek help promptly.

7. Sinusitis (Acute Sinus Infection)

Who we can treat: Adults and children aged 12 years and over

What to expect: Symptoms include facial pressure, blocked nose, and thick nasal discharge lasting more than 10 days. Our pharmacists can evaluate your symptoms and suggest nasal sprays, pain relief, or – if necessary – antibiotic treatment.
